Course
Description:
I D E A T
I O N is a course that explores the
creative process - observation, visualization, intuition, self-exploration,
emotional response, inspiration, aesthetics, meaning, impact, purpose, and
cultural context. It is about what
you want to express as a moving image artist and why; what you think moving
image arts can and should be. This is all brought to bear through class
discussion on the specific ideas you are originating and developing.
Goals
of the course:
· To learn the vocabulary of film
language and the hierarchy of film production.
· To comprehend story telling techniques
and to use them effectively.
·
To
strengthen your ability to conceive and develop ideas that will lead to
compelling, authentic, personally meaningful moving image media projects.
·
To
facilitate the expression and development of your own unique artistic identity,
cinematic voice and point of view through an exploration of personal
experience, interests, concerns, values and inherent taste.
·
To
motivate you to develop ideas for stories, characters and experiences through
observation of, research into, and direct experience with real life.
·
To
encourage awareness of the infinite possibilities for creative expression
inherent in motion picture media, including documentary and experimental forms.
·
To
enhance your collaborative skills through group discussion, giving and
responding to feedback, and collective brainstorming.

Course
Website: The syllabus, information on class
assignments, as well as handouts and additional reading material may be posted
on the class website.
Email Policy:
I’m always reachable via email; however, email correspondence needs to
be conducted using santafeuniversity.edu accounts.
Policy on Digital Devices and Phones:
You must turn off all devices before entering class. Violating this policy can impact your
final grade.
Policy on
Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation are absolutely
essential in this class. Much
of the work we do will be in class. If you are not in class at the time
attendance is taken you will be marked absent. An excused absence means you are
sick (I'll need a doctor's note), in jail, or otherwise legitimately kept from
coming to class. More than 3
absences can result in not receiving credit for the course. Tardiness is unacceptable and also will
result in a lowering of your final grade.
Bottom line: Attend
every class, being late is not acceptable.
Policy on Late Assignments:
Unless you have a legitimate excused absence when work is due, late
assignments will not be accepted for credit.
Policy
For Incompletes: Incompletes will only be given under the most dire circumstances
and only if 75% of the course work has been completed. If you think your situation warrants an
incomplete, you must make an appointment with me to discuss and document the
situation and then develop a contract for the completion of the course.
Ethics/Academic Integrity:
Students are expected to exhibit academic honesty in the completion of
all course assignments, exams, and activities. Cheating, fabrication, and
plagiarism will not be tolerated. Incidences of academic dishonesty will be
dealt with according to the Santa Fe University of Art and Design policy on
academic integrity.
Students With Learning Differences:
Santa Fe University of Art and
Design makes every effort to provide appropriate accommodations for students
with documented learning differences in compliance with the American
Disabilities Act. Students may
request accommodations by registering with the Disability Services Office in
the Academic Resource Center.
Contact Emily Powell at 505-473-6570.
Emergency
Class Cancellation: If an emergency arises in which class must be cancelled, a note
will be posted on the classroom door informing students of the cancellation and
related information. If a cancellation notice is not posted, students
are expected to remain in the classroom until dismissed by a college
representative. In the event of severe weather, students should listen to local
radio/television announcements for information or check the Santa Fe University
website: santafeuniversity.edu
If the college is open, students are expected to attend class.
PLEASE
NOTE: Attendance at
the final class, is required, so make any end of semester travel plans
accordingly.
